ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 110: Rep. Chris Miller vows to continue fighting against tax increases

110

Illinois State House District 110 issued the following announcement on July 11

In the year of tax hikes in Illinois, State Representative Chris Miller (R-Oakland) says he and a few of his colleagues stood firm in opposing tax increases but now he says he is facing opposition from an unlikely source – members of his own party.

“This past spring, taxes on motor fuel, parking, vehicle trade-ins, video gaming and cigarettes all increased, and I voted against every single proposed tax increase,” Miller said. “I was not surprised to see the Democrat majorities in the House and the Senate support the Governor’s tax increases, but I am amazed that so many of my Republican colleagues voted for these tax hikes. I thought the Republican party was supposed to be for fiscal responsibility and lower taxes.”

Section II A of the Illinois Republican Party Platform reads, “We understand taxing businesses translates into fewer jobs, less investment and higher consumer prices. Therefore, we oppose increases in taxes, fees and mandates at all levels.”

Despite the party’s clear statements of opposition to tax increases, Miller said his vocal criticisms of Republican support for tax hikes is being used against him. He said he has been informed that House Republican Leader Jim Durkin has pulled his communications staffer.

“It apparently is completely acceptable to violate a clear tenant of the Republican Party platform as no one who voted for the tax increases is being penalized in any way,” Miller said. “I make some comments about my disappointment in Republican support for tax hikes and that is what gets our Republican leadership angry.”

Miller said he will not be deterred and will continue to voice his opposition to tax increases.

“I will continue to speak my mind and will continue to oppose tax increases,” Miller said. “The vast majority of my constituents are furious about the tax increases approved this spring. I hear from them every day and the message I give to them is that I will stand with them by opposing tax hikers regardless of their political party affiliation.”
