Former state school employee Emel paid in $38K to teachers' pension fund, could collect $591K in retirement

Former state school employee Betty Emel, who retired in September 2017, saved $38,182 toward a pension over 13 years working for public schools, Teachers' Retirement System of the State of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Emel would collect as much as $590,983, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes East Central Reporter.

The projection assumes Emel received $12,422 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Emel will have already received $38,396 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the teachers' pension fund.
