Property tax rebate checks are in the mail in Shelby Township.

The Illinois House and Senate last year unanimously passed a bill placing a cap on accumulated funds for the township. Sponsored by State Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) and State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet), House Bill 1896 alters the Township code for the purposes of instituting the cap.

The Edgar County Watchdog group pegs the total amount to be returned to an estimated 2,800 property owners as $735,461.94, or an average of $262.66 per property parcel.

Halbrook and Chapin are headed back to Springfield in 2019 after running unopposed in November’s general election in the 102nd and 51st districts, respectively.

The 102nd District includes all or parts of Deer Park, Forest Lake and Green Oaks. The 51st District encompasses Champaign, De Witt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Vermilion.
