Shelbyville Community Unit School District 4 students suspended, expelled 116 times in a single school year

Shelbyville Community Unit School District 4 reported one expulsions and 115 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred one students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 116 students during the year. That equates to 9.7 percent of the 1,195 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with drugs.

Of the 76 in-school suspensions, 57 were given to boys and 19 were given to girls, including 10 elementary or middle schoolers and 66 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 71 incidents. There were two incidents of tobacco. For 68 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 39 out-of-school suspensions, including 18 elementary or middle schoolers and 21 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 20 incidents. There were eight incidents of violence without physical injury. For 17 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
