Effingham Community Unit School District 40 students suspended, expelled 230 times in a single school year

Effingham Community Unit School District 40 reported four expulsions and 226 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 230 students during the year. That equates to 9 percent of the 2,565 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for two incidents with alcohol and two incidents with unspecified reasons.

Of the 142 in-school suspensions, 109 were given to boys and 33 were given to girls, including 81 elementary or middle schoolers and 61 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 141 incidents. There were one incidents of tobacco. For 86 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 84 out-of-school suspensions, 58 were given to boys and 26 were given to girls, including 31 elementary or middle schoolers and 53 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 66 incidents. There were 10 incidents of drugs. For 32 incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
