Cumberland Community Unit School District 77 students suspended, expelled 80 times in a single school year

Cumberland Community Unit School District 77 reported three expulsions and 77 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 80 students during the year. That equates to 7.8 percent of the 1,030 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for one incident with violence without physical injury, one incident with tobacco and one incident with unspecified reasons.

Of the 73 in-school suspensions, 57 were given to boys and 16 were given to girls, including 47 elementary or middle schoolers and 26 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 57 incidents. There were 14 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 50 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for violence without physical injury. The category includes two incidents. There were two incidents of unspecified reasons. For three incidents, students were suspended for 3-5 days.
