Rep. Reggie Phillips (R-Charleston) told the House floor about his new friend to prove a fiscal point.
“I was fortunate to spend time with a gentleman this weekend who just got back to work in southern Illinois in the coal mines,” Phillips said Monday at the House floor debate.
He said the new acquaintance had a few questions for him. The first was: Why did it take lawmakers so long to begin work in the coal mine since he has several friends who are looking for work?

“He wanted to know what we had to do to bring jobs back to Illinois,” Phillips said.
Phillips said he told him of some proposals, especially with the coal mine industry, that got killed in the House and then noted his new friend’s salary.
“You know what his starting wage is, Mr. Speaker? … It is $27 an hour,” Phillips said.
Phillips concluded asking his peers why it's so hard for the House to work on producing good-paying jobs.
