The price of local government: City of Monticello

The City of Monticello budget was $7.59 million for its 2015 fiscal year, or $3,537.94 per household.

That's an increase of 17.4 percent from 2014, when the city spent $6.46 million, or $3,012.66 per household.

Monticello has 2,145 households and a population of 5,548.

Since 2001, the City of Monticello budget has fallen by 6.4 percent, from $8.10 million. The city population has grown eight percent over the same period, from 5,138.

Salaries accounted for 27.8 percent of city spending in 2015. Monticello property taxpayers paid $2.11 million for 29 full-time employees and 147 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 26 full-time employees and 124 part-time employees, and spent $1.53 million.
