3. Potential Civics Class Washington D.C. Trip
Social Science teacher Marshall Schacht presented information regarding his Civics class that competed in a “We the People” competition in Chicago. They are eligible to advance to the competition that will be held in Washington, D.C. in April. Student Andrea Coursey was present and discussed how the competition worked. Mr. Schacht distributed handouts showing cost, timeline, and fundraising plans. The trip will be up for approval at the February meeting. Mr. Page praised Mr. Schacht for his work on this with the students.
4. AP Chemistry
Mr. Page presented information concerning adding an AP Chemistry course beginning with the 2017-18 school year. The curriculum is rigorous and will rival Calculus as the hardest course offered. It will also require some summer work. He recommended implementing this as a weighted course in our curriculum. That would bring the number of weighted courses offered at SJO to 11. Department chairpersons will be reviewing weighted classes in the coming year. This matter will be up for potential action in February.
5. Second Quarter Financial Report
Mr. Brooks discussed the FY 2017 2nd Quarter Budget Report contained in the board packet. Expenses are doing fine in all funds except Debt Services. A couple of numbers were off when First Midstate gave us the numbers on the bond refinancing. The money in the fund is adequate but it will exceed the budgeted figure at fiscal year-end. Fire Prevention and Safety might change if an additional security camera project is approved by the state to be paid from that fund.
As to revenues, the news is not as positive. No state revenue has been received for transportation or special education for this fiscal year. We are owed $89,216 in special education and $18,790 in transportation for a total of $108,006. The state is not funding at 100% as they try to make people believe. Furthermore, it is looking like the state is going to bail out the Chicago Teacher Retirement System that Chicago was supposed to levy for and didn’t.
6. Superintendent Evaluation and Contract
Mr. Brooks distributed the superintendent evaluation instrument to each board member and requested that they be completed and returned to Mr. Rein prior to February 22nd.
7. Principal Report
Mr. Page discussed discipline statistics for the first semester. Detentions and Saturday School are mainly from late slips and absences. He attributed the great results to teachers doing a great job in handling their classes and Mr. Smith, Mrs. Rein, and the SAP team also working well in handling discipline issues.
Eighteen students were recognized as Illinois State Scholars for outstanding academic achievement.
Mr. Smith recognized three staff members for various accomplishments; Mr. Retz for National Federation of State High School Associations 2016 Coach of the Year for Illinois Girls’ Cross Country, Mr. Haley for 2016 Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Area Coach of the Year, and Mr. Sutton as Teacher of the Month for Mix 94.5 radio.
