Shelbyville Township held an electoral board meeting last week to deliberate on Road Commissioner Candidate Corey Wells' nomination forms before deciding to strike down a recently raised objection.
Current Road Commissioner Robin Robertson was the one who filed the initial objection to Wells' nomination forms.
Upon the filing of Robertson's objection, resident Brad Halbrook filed a motion to disqualify the electoral board members because two of the original board members were also running for seats on the Shelbyville board. The electoral board disqualified itself before reviewing Robertson's objection on Jan. 3.
In addition, the board failed to meet in a timely manner after receiving Robertson's objection.
Once the board notified the chief justice of the Circuit Court about its disqualification on Jan. 3, the judge had to choose three new members for the board. The newly appointed board met on Jan. 20 to review the objections as well as Wells' motion to strike the objects.
Illinois Leaks has published a series of articles detailing the subject, featuring contributions from a local watchdog group.
As the Edgar County Watchdogs pointed out in one of its Illinois Leaks articles, the objection that was filed by Robertson did not comply with the Election Code. The board was advised on the information an objection must contain and how it must be filed.
Upon review of Robertson's objection, the board granted Wells' motion. His name will be placed on the April ballot.
