State Rep. Reggie Phillips (R-Charleston) of the 110th District gained a key endorsement this past week as the Illinois Family Action PAC threw its support behind his re-election campaign.

“Reggie has proven his credentials in Springfield,” David Smith, executive director of the Illinois Family Institute and Illinois Family Action, said. “The candidates who receive our endorsement share our pro-life and pro-family views.”

Illinois Family Action, a legislative action arm of the Illinois Family Institute, is a political advocacy and lobbying organization that promotes the interests of family, faith and freedom, the organization’s website details.

Smith said the organization’s endorsements are based on a voter guide survey, which the Illinois Family Institute asked candidates to complete. In addition, Smith said each candidate’s voting record is carefully examined to make sure it falls in line with the Illinois Family Institute’s criteria.

Phillips, who was elected to the Illinois State House in 2014, took all six counties in his district during the primary. He has voiced strong opposition against House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) throughout his term and has been a vocal proponent of funding for education.

During the legislative battle over the Illinois budget this past summer, Phillips fought for 90 percent funding for Eastern Illinois University, which is in his district. The funding came at a time when the university faced hundreds of possible layoffs due to a more than six-month halt in their state funding.

Since the passage of the state’s stopgap budget, Phillips also has been holding several budget town hall meetings with voters, all of which have seen high attendance.

“Town hall meetings are a great way to hear directly from the constituents and to be able to answer their questions right away,” Phillips told the East Central Reporter in a prior interview.

Phillip’s district includes Clark, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Edgar and Lawrence counties.
