The Cumberland CUSD No. 77 board of education met Thursday, July 21.

July 21, 2016

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by President Jack Ingram. Members present included Ben Bland, Steve Layton, Kim Starwalt, Bob Blade, and Anita Hayden. Others present included Student Council Representative Sierra Starwalt and Administration Kevin Maynard, High School Principal; Stacy Keyser, Middle School Principal; Daniel Huffman, Elementary Principal, and Todd Butler, Superintendent.

President Ingram welcomed the visitors. Visitors present were Sherry Parker and Roy Clapp.

President Ingram reviewed the Consent Agenda items:

a. Approval of the minutes of the June 28, 2016 Regular Meeting

b. Review financial and budget reports

c. Approve current invoices for payment

d. Act upon the Ethics and Gift Ban Policy

e. Seek bids for bread, milk and fuel

f. Act upon resolution to keep Executive Minutes Closed

A motion was made by Steve Layton and seconded by Ben Bland to approve the Consent Agenda A-F. All members present voted “Aye.”

High School Board Report submitted by Kevin Maynard

Building

1. Summer cleaning is going very well. The inside of the building is looking very good.

2. Registration for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year will take place on August 9th from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

3. There will be freshman orientation titled “Pirate Training” on August 18th from 10:00 to 2:00 for all incoming freshman. More information will be available at registration.

4. Teacher in-service will be on August 25th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a meet your teacher event scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening.

5. August 26th will be the first day of student attendance with a 2:10 dismissal.

Extracurricular Activities

1. The official IHSA start of fall activities will occur on the following dates:

a. Football = August 8th with the first contest on August 26th at home vs. Decatur LSA starting at 7:00.

b. Volleyball = August 10th with the first contest on August 30th at home vs. Charleston starting at 6:00.

c. Cross Country = August 10th with the first contest on September 1st at Newton, start time is TBA.

d. For more information regarding practice location and times individuals should contact the high school office.

2. This is reminder to all individuals that before they can start practice for high school activities that they must have a physical on file in the office.

Middle School Board Report submitted by Stacy Keyser

Softball will begin practices on July 25. Cross Country and Baseball will begin practices on August 1. All of the middle school sports schedules have been posted on the school website. Please plan to watch some of our student athletes in competition this fall.

There will be a 5th grade orientation on Tuesday, August 16 at 6:00 p.m. for all incoming 5th grade students and their parents. More information will be mailed to parents and students in early August.

Middle school students are encouraged to attend registration with their parents on

August 9th in the high school cafeteria between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to finalize their art, band, choir, and flex courses for the upcoming school year.

Elementary Board Report Submitted by Daniel Huffman

1. District wide Registration will be held on August 9th from 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

Any parent/guardian of a Kindergarten student that has not pre-registered their child needs to come to the grade school between the hours of 7:00-1:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday to complete the pre-registration process. The kindergarten students will also need to attend the registration on August 9th to complete the entire registration process.

A Teacher institute will be held on August 25th from 8:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m.

The first day of student attendance will be August 26th. It will be a 2:20 p.m. dismissal day.

Five students had perfect attendance during the 2015-2016 school year. Those students include: 1st grader Emma Light and 3rd graders Reese Koester, Jaefa Shields, Isaiah Winnett, and Brett Wolke.

Superintendent report from Todd Butler

NeCo Asphalt has been resurfacing the parking lots, and lines will be added to the surfaces upon completion. Neco Asphalt and their employees have gone above and beyond while completing repairs. The electrical project is close to completion. It is anticipated that the project should be completed within the next two weeks.

A motion was made by Anita Hayden to approve Commercial Insurance through Prairie State Insurance Cooperative. It was seconded by Bob Blade. All present voted “Aye.”

There was no closed session.

Steve Layton made the motion to adjourn. It was seconded by Ben Bland. All members present voted “Aye.” The meeting adjourned at 6:13 p.m.
