Mattoon has constructed a CSO water treatment plant.
To manage municipal water works, a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) satellite treatment site is taking shape in the form of a new wastewater handling facility on North Sixth Street, thanks to the City of Mattoon.
Located near Riley Creek, the facility will treat storm water that overflows from the combined sewer system well before it reaches the creek and its surrounding area.
The treatment procedure will include the multiple steps of screening, settling, chlorination and dechlorination.
Funded partially by a low-interest loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s (IEPA) Water Pollution Control Loan Program, the project is designed to protect Riley Creek’s overall water quality. Riley Creek is a tributary of both Kickapoo Creek and the Embarras River.
CSO sites contain both municipal wastewater and surface runoff. Facilities are impacted by local rainfall, which can create variation in the amount of particulate wash-off and dilution over time. Additionally, land development practices can affect runoff flows. Rivers in the area can also be affected by pollutants.
Mattoon’s central water treatment facility, located at 820 South Fifth Place, serves 7000 residential customers and 1000 commercial and industrial clients.
A portion of the funds for the IEPA loan program was made available by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
