The Village of Tolono board meeting on Feb. 2 began with a productive public comment session, leading the board to pledge several thousand dollars in support of an upcoming community event.

When resident Brian Booher approached the board during the public session to give a presentation about the Tolono Fun Day festival — complete with plans for a 5k race and film on June 24 and 25 — Village President Jeff Holt initially estimated that $6,000 would be allocated for the event. After a brief discussion, however, the board indicated its willingness to provide up to $8,000, with the item going forward to the next meeting’s agenda.

Board members also approved the idea of purchasing a repurposed “hot box” for repairing roadways at a cost of $15,000, planning to place the item on the next meeting’s agenda.

Engineer Anthony Jansen updated the group on bids in progress for a drainage project, followed by authorization to hire a vendor to prepare pesticide permit renewal paperwork on behalf of the village. Zoning Administrator Randy Bachert reported on properties with permit issues.

Debate ensued about the fate of a historical firehouse at 205 E. Main St. facing possible demolition. Rena Anderson reported research revealing that the existing building is not the original firehouse, and the matter was tabled until a future meeting.

The topic of roadway safety yielded a discussion of reducing speed limits for the entire village with the exception of Route 45, with plans for a public awareness campaign. Finally, job descriptions were approved to expedite filling vacancies.
