Sarah Bush Lincoln announces newly raised scholarship funds.

Complete with champagne, cocktails, dancing and dining, Sarah Bush Lincoln's (SBL) 32nd Annual La Grande Soirée recently succeeded in raising close to $20,000 for its health care career student scholarship program at the Keller Convention Center in Effingham.

“It was a great evening and an easy way for people to support a great cause,” Kim Lockart, the event coordinator, said. “With today’s shortage of rural health care providers, we are committed to helping these students achieve their academic health care goals.”

SBL’s Guild scholarship program has given over half a million dollars since 1979 to students pursuing careers in nursing, medical technology, radiology, physical therapy, pharmacy, dietetics, medical coding and speech pathology. Scholarship amounts vary, depending on the student’s scholastic performance, financial need and funding availability.

Prizes at the SBL Guild event featured a raffle package including four box-seat tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals home game against the Phillies in May, plus hotel accommodations, spending money, branded apparel and more. The winner was Michelle Buenker.

Towne Square Jewelers of Charleston sponsored a “Diamond & Ice” event in which participants purchased glasses of champagne for a chance to win a diamond necklace valued at $4,975, with Kaleigh Taylor picked as this year’s lucky recipient. Additional event sponsors included local banks, medical practices, automobile dealerships, retailers and businesses, and individuals.
