The Community Unit School District recently welcomed several new coaches and staff members at a January meeting.

Ten coaches for various sports and one language teacher joined the staff of Community Unit School District No. 7 at its Jan. 19 meeting at Unity Junior High School (UJHS).

Adopting the scheduled agenda and consent agenda items, board members turned their attention to buildings and grounds, learning that the high school was scheduled for roof work and that elementary school buildings would possibly be fitted with security locks and cameras over the summer.

Good financial news came in the form of net savings to taxpayers -- worth $92,951.67 -- due to bond refunds, the superintendent announced.

Several new hires for 2015-16 were announced, comprised of Jeff Kyle as a UJHS assistant track coach, as well as Jason Henry and Jessi Kohlenberg, in a volunteer capacity.

At the high school level, Justin Givhan was named volunteer UHS assistant baseball coach; Carl Parks, Ray Spencer, Brad Shotton and Arthur Schmidt were all appointed as volunteer Bass Fishing Boat Captains. Also at UHS, Nick Curry was named volunteer track coach, and Jessica Johnson was named volunteer softball coach.

UHS also welcomed Emily Sanders as a new Spanish teacher for the 2016-17 school term.

The board moved into an executive session for just under 25 minutes in order to discuss personnel, student discipline and collective bargaining topics.

After setting the next meeting for 7 p.m. on Feb. 16, the meeting came to a close.
