Governor JB Pritzker recently stated that Democrats have been “delivering for the people” of Illinois, emphasizing his party’s focus on serving residents. “I think that is what the Democratic Party is all about, delivering for the people. And here in Illinois, we’ve been doing that, I’ve been doing that for the last several years,” Pritzker said during a media availability.

However, critics argue that recent legislative actions contradict these claims. During the latest veto session, Governor Pritzker and Democratic lawmakers approved an $8 billion energy initiative described by opponents as a “Green New Giveaway,” which they say will increase energy costs for families. Additionally, a $2.5 billion bailout package for Chicago Transit was passed, including tax increases and a 60% hike in tolls.

According to data cited by opponents of these measures, Illinois currently has some of the highest taxes in several categories nationwide: property taxes, combined state and local taxes, and cell phone tax rates.

Chris Miller, a Republican who began representing Illinois’ 101st House District after being elected in 2023 to succeed Reggie Phillips, is among those voicing concern over these developments.

While Governor Pritzker maintains his administration is focused on affordability for working families, critics point to rising costs and increased tax burdens under his leadership.
