Articles of impeachment have been filed against Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, with allegations that his public statements have incited violence. The charges reference remarks made by Pritzker during his State of the State address, at the Human Rights Campaign Los Angeles Dinner, and at an event in Manchester, New Hampshire. Details about these comments are available in an article from The Kansas City Star.
A petition calling for Governor Pritzker’s impeachment has been launched online.
Debate continues over state and federal immigration policies. Governor Pritzker has maintained support for accepting migrants arriving in Illinois, while former President Donald Trump has focused on increasing law enforcement efforts to detain undocumented immigrants. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reports that over 400,000 undocumented immigrants have been arrested, with 70% having criminal convictions or charges. The DHS has also urged states including California, Illinois, and New York to cooperate with federal deportation efforts. Over the summer, DHS recruitment for Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly drew more than 150,000 applications.
Governor Pritzker has claimed that former President Trump’s actions are aimed at influencing election outcomes. Meanwhile, media coverage has highlighted Trump's renewed attention on Chicago.
Financial concerns remain a central issue in Illinois politics. In the past three years, state spending has risen by approximately $9 billion, bringing the total to about $55 billion. Since Pritzker took office nearly seven years ago, discretionary spending has increased by more than $16 billion—a rise of about 43%.
Chicago faces a projected budget deficit of $1.15 billion in 2026. State funding includes $4 million allocated to Centro De Trabajadores Unidos for assisting immigrants, $2.5 billion spent on services for undocumented immigrants, and $600 million directed to non-governmental organizations.
Recently, Illinois completed a bond sale intended to pay off $186 million in pension obligations. While this move reduces unfunded pension liabilities, it also increases the state’s bonded debt by an equal amount.
A report from Truth in Accounting concluded that Illinois could not meet all its financial obligations at the end of fiscal year 2024. The state ranked as the third worst in the nation in this regard.
To address fiscal challenges, some Chicago officials have proposed new taxes affecting rideshares, property owners, and liquor sales. The city is currently short by about $1 billion for its upcoming budget.
Miller, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state's 101st House District, replacing previous state representative Reggie Phillips.
