City of Newton Zoning Board met May 13.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Zoning Board of Appeals met on May 13, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the City Council Room at Newton City Hall.

Roll call was taken. Present: Lanette Huddleston, Kenneth Belcher, Ken Albrecht, John Stone and Twyla Harvey. Absent: Tom Clark.

Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kenneth Belcher.

Minutes were read and approved.

Chairman Albrecht then turned the meeting over to John Stone. John said we were meeting to clear up some incorrect zoning. The zoning needs to be cleared up due to Jasper County School District wanting to expand Newton Elementary. While there is no expansion in the works at Newton High School, the zoning needs to be cleaned up as well as the elementary. Newton Elementary needs to be rezoned to SR1 and Newton High School needs to be rezoned to SR2. John also stated that was the only thing we were meeting on tonight,

Twyla Harvey made a motion to clean up the incorrect zoning and Kenneth Belcher seconded the motion. Motion passed and will be recommended to Council.

Mayor Josh Kuhl asked if we had discussed fencing around rental storage buildings and John Stone responded that we had not.

Kenneth Belcher made a motion to adjourn and Lanette Huddleston seconded the motion.
