Nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system, often being the first point of contact for patients. They are responsible for asking questions, administering shots, discussing treatments, and checking vital signs. Their close interaction with patients allows them to form significant relationships and provide compassionate care.

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually to recognize their contributions. In 2025, it will take place from May 12-18 with the theme "The Power of Nurses," highlighting their impact on healthcare and patient lives.

HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital has a long-standing appreciation for nurses since its inception 150 years ago. Among its dedicated staff are Laura Will and her daughters Dani McGuire and Lexi Will, who work at the hospital in various nursing roles.

Laura Will has been part of St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital for 38 years, serving as a Charge Nurse on the medical/surgical care unit's fourth floor. She describes herself as an organizer and troubleshooter on her floor.

Dani McGuire joined the hospital in 2014 after completing her education at Lake Land College and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. She now holds a supervisory role that involves assisting various departments within the hospital.

Lexi Will is currently an extern at the hospital while pursuing her nursing degree at Lake Land College with plans to continue her education at SIU-E. Her experiences have reinforced her decision to pursue nursing as a career.

All three women emphasize the essential role nurses play in healthcare, acting as advocates for patients and ensuring they receive proper care. Laura notes that nurses are "the backbone of the medical field," while Dani highlights their dual responsibility for physical and mental patient care.

The family atmosphere among staff members at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital is also appreciated by Laura, Dani, and Lexi, who describe it as a supportive environment where colleagues help each other through shifts.

Laura expresses pride in seeing her daughters follow in her footsteps: “It makes me very proud,” she said. “I just hope they love being a nurse as much as I do.”
