The Orland Professional Firefighters Union has called for an independent investigation into financial practices at the Orland Fire Protection District. This request follows reports of significant spending on media relations and payments to a diversity consultant who was incarcerated at the time.
In a letter addressed to the district's board, the union expressed concerns about alleged financial mismanagement and potential conflicts of interest regarding contract awards. The union stated that if these allegations are true, they could negatively impact their ability to serve the community effectively.
"The Orland Professional Firefighters IAFF-AFFI Local 2754 have been closely monitoring the ongoing accusations on social media regarding misappropriations and the appearance of significant conflicts regarding contract awards at the Orland Fire Protection District," the letter reads. The union emphasized its commitment to uncovering any financial improprieties, stating, "We believe it is our collective responsibility to the District and its citizens to take all actions necessary to uncover and stop any further financial missteps."
The firefighters' union also highlighted their unique position within the district's operations, suggesting they could provide valuable insights during an investigation. They urged the board to employ an independent special counsel or involve the Public Integrity Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s office for impartiality in investigating these claims.
"While it is certainly within the purview of the Board to investigate these allegations in a manner it sees fit, to remove any doubt regarding impartiality we are requesting that the District utilize the services of an independent special counsel and/or the Public Integrity Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s office," stated Local 2754. The union pledged full cooperation with any investigation efforts.
The letter was signed by the Executive Board of Orland Professional Firefighters IAFF-AFFI Local 2754.
