After a series of events involving Shelby County's administration, the contracted auditing firm has decided to terminate its agreement with the county. This decision follows a subpoena filed by Shelby County State’s Attorney Ruth Woolery against the auditor, which was later quashed by the court. Additionally, both the County Board Chairman and Vice-Chairman resigned from their positions.
The auditing firm communicated its decision through a letter addressed to the county clerk and treasurer. The letter stated: “During the past two weeks, Shelby County has experienced the resignation of key members of its Board of Commissioners which we believe will cause significant disruption in our ability to effectively perform the FY2023 audit. As such, we are terminating our agreement to perform the FY2023 audit, effective immediately.“
The firm also expressed concerns about future audits for Shelby County, noting that compliance issues identified in previous audits have not been adequately addressed. They remarked that finding a new auditor might come at a high cost for the county.
