State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) has introduced House Bill 5875, aiming to make it a felony for non-citizens to vote in Illinois elections.
The bill stipulates that any non-citizen who knowingly registers to vote or votes in an election, including municipal elections, will be guilty of a Class 4 felony. Additionally, anyone who knowingly registers a non-citizen to vote will also face the same felony charge. If approved by the Governor, the law would take effect immediately.
“This new law would make it clear that if you knowingly register a non-citizen to vote in Illinois it would be a Class 4 Felony and if you knowingly register and try to vote, you would also be up for a felony conviction,” stated Rep. Niemerg. “We need to make it absolutely clear that our citizens in our state are the ones who should be counted in elections that determine what is in the best interest of the State of Illinois.”
