Rep. Blaine Wilhour is urging individuals to participate in the festivities commemorating the 15th anniversary of the National Road Interpretive Center in Vandalia. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Also referred to as the "Road That Built the Nation," the National Road was established in 1806 under the legislation signed by President Thomas Jefferson. It holds the distinction of being the only road constructed entirely using federal funds. Originally spanning from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois, the National Road played a pivotal role in opening up Illinois to settlement.

Presently, the Illinois National Road extends 164 miles from Marshall to East St. Louis, following the path of U.S. Route 40 and Interstate 70.

The National Road Interpretive Center was inaugurated on February 12, 2009, in conjunction with the commemoration of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. As Lincoln's political career began as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives, the Center was established in Vandalia, where he served at the Statehouse. By visiting the National Road Interpretive Center in Vandalia, visitors have the opportunity to relive the history of this iconic road through the perspectives of those who built it and those who traversed it.

In anticipation of the anniversary celebration, Rep.
