Bierman is a veteran leader in higher education with a diverse background in a wide range of university operations, including experience in budgeting, facilities, planning, auxiliaries, procurement, human resources, risk, information technology, debt financing, and an adjunct faculty member. Throughout the interview process, Bierman demonstrated himself to be a professional higher education executive who creates opportunities to move institutions forward through teamwork, understanding the unique university and higher education needs of today, and collaborative leadership skills.

Dr. David Glassman, president of EIU, is excited to add Bierman to EIU’s executive leadership team.

“Matt’s addition to the EIU team will benefit the university greatly,” Glassman said. “Throughout the interview process, Matt clearly exhibited his ability to lead through passionate collaboration across myriad departments and functions. We are excited for him to join the team and can’t wait to see how his leadership will positively impact the business and corporate relationship functions of the university.”

Throughout his career in higher education, Bierman has created long-term financial modeling tools, developed efficient operations and advocated the value of outside partnerships, and managed cash flow and necessary financial operations through unprecedented reductions in State support. Bierman will come to EIU from Illinois Wesleyan University, where beginning in 2018 he served as chief financial officer, a member of the President’s Cabinet, and liaison to the Board of Trustees for a variety of board committees. Bierman was responsible for the annual budget process, a lead contact to banking institutions, investment and financial advisors and rating agencies, and provided direction for a variety of on-campus projects, including several multi-million-dollar capital planning projects. He provided direction on expense management, and on new revenue opportunities. He also led programs that focused on procurement and inventory, training and accountability, and support for the operational review of Health Services, Wellness, Print and Mail Services, Campus Safety, Bookstore, rental management, transportation, and information technology services.

Prior to his time at IWU, Bierman served as the Vice President for Administrative Services (2016-18) interim director of Business Services (2014-18), director of University Budget (2011-17) and director of Residential Facilities (2006-12) at Western Illinois University, among other roles at the Macomb institution from 1999 to 2006. Bierman also was an assistant residence hall director at Ball State University from 1997-99. He earned a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Supply Chain Management in 2003 from WIU, a Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education in 1999 from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and a Bachelor of Business in Information Management degree with a minor in Computer Science in 1997, also from WIU.

Bierman currently lives in Bloomington, Illinois with his wife Stacy and 3 sons. In his free time, he enjoys gardening, farming, sports, and spending time with family.
