City of Mattoon issued the following announcement on April 26.
The City of Mattoon and Coles County will be conducting a Cleanup Day from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Roll-off dumpsters will be available at the Mattoon Yard Waste Facility at Shelby Avenue and Logan Street.
The dumpsters are available for City of Mattoon and Coles County residents. A Driver’s License, or other proof of residency, is required in order to dispose of material at the site. The site is open for residential clean-up only. The site will not be open to commercial contractors. Load size will be limited to 1 ton trucks and trailers.
Residents may dispose of materials at the following locations:
General Waste - Advance Disposal will have dumpsters available at the Yard Waste Facility for all waste except; Landscape Waste, Appliances, Electronic Appliances, Car Parts, Tires, Batteries, Fluorescent Light Bulbs, Liquid Wastes, Concrete, Brick, Rock, Soil, or Ashes.
Yard Waste - The Yard Waste Facility will be open for the disposal of leaves, limbs, grass clippings, and other plant material for City of Mattoon Residents only. The Yard Waste Facility is open 7 days per week during daylight hours.
Scrap Metal - Mervis Industries will have a dumpster available for metals and appliances. No TV’s or monitors will be accepted.
Tires - Neal Tire & Auto will accept car tires and light truck tires at 1800 Lake Land Boulevard. Free tire disposal is limited to 8 tires per customer.
Batteries - Battery Specialists will accept rechargeable batteries at 309 North 15th Street. Alkaline batteries are not accepted.
Document Shredding - Thrivent Financial will provide document shredding from 9A to 11A at St John’s Lutheran School at 100 Broadway Avenue. The group is accepting donations of cash or food for the Mattoon Community Food Center in lieu of a fee for the shredding. Harris Metals will be collecting electronics at the same site. No TV’s or monitors.
Liquid Wastes - Wastes such as paint may not be disposed of while in liquid form. They may be absorbed into kitty litter or other absorbents, allowed to dry, and then be disposed of with household waste.
Residents bringing debris to the event are asked to line up on Shelby Avenue, entering from the west. The City will have personnel available to supervise traffic and unloading. Residents are required to unload their own material. City personnel will be available to assist with heavy material as needed.
The City of Mattoon will make special collection arrangements, on a case-by-case basis, for senior citizens, and persons with disabilities, in the City of Mattoon, who cannot otherwise get their material to the designated sites. Those residents can call 235-5171, 7 A.M. to 3 P.M., Monday thru Friday to request collection. Special collection requests must be called in by noon on Wednesday, May 15. Special collections must be at the curb for collection no later than 7 A.M. on Thursday, May 16.
