City of Newton City Council met Jan. 8.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

Attending: Ben Bollman, Ron Heltsley, Doug Weddell, Jason Warfel, Tom Brown, Jack Thompson, Amber Volk, Mark Bolander, Beth Probst, Natalie Hopson, Brett Lessley, Marlene Harris, Ed Webb, Louis Ochs, Mindy Hartke, Andy Johnson, Kris Newton, Scott Bierman.

1. Call to order, Chairman Scott Bierman.

2. Motion to approve previous meeting minutes made by Andy Johnson, second by Mark Bolander, motion passed.

3. Annual Election of JEDI Officers and Board Members

Motion to approve JEDI Officers and Board Members made by Brett Lessley, second by Andy Johnson, and motion passed

4. Annual Budget Approval: Motion to approve annual budget made by Louis Ochs, second by Andy Johnson, and motion passed.

5. Annual JEDI Celebration update:

a. Scott Bierman: Feb 6th 11:30am.

i. The Community Center will be $20 per hour. They will need our general liability insurance and for us to sign paperwork since we no longer have a contract with the U of I Extension Office. It may possibly be held at the High School Library. We will update as soon as a location is set.

6. Monthly Updates

a. Amber Volk, Executive Director

i. We have ordered the new car decals/stickers with our new logo.

1. They are being made by King’s Graphix.

2. Cost is $418.28 for 1000 stickers

ii. New restaurant coming to Newton: The Little Dinner. Located on east Washington street, across the road from Expert Collision Center. Currently undergoing remodeling.

b. Mark Bolander, Mayor of Newton

i. Medical Clinic coming along nicely. Looking to be finished by end of February or beginning of March.

ii. Parking lot behind Cobblestone Hotel and Suites has started construction.

iii. Marketing Community: the new logo turned out well. City is starting to implement the logo on city vehicles.

c. Ron Heltsley, Jasper County Board Chairman

i. Currently in annual audit.

ii. Still working on the Hazard Mitigation plan.

iii. Jasper County Board meeting will be Thursday, January 10th at 7pm

1. There will be discussion on the new jail.

d. Andy Johnson, Superintendent of Jasper County Unit #1.

i. Kids are back from Christmas break.

ii. We estimate to break ground for the building projects by August 2019, both the grade school and high school. We will also start bidding projects in the next two months.

iii. We are seeking a food contract service for unit #1. Currently are heating up meals and are looking for a made from scratch contract to have a better food quality.

7. Comments from those attending the meeting.

a. Natalie Hopson: Upcoming events for Jasper County Chamber of Commerce.

i. Annual Banquet for current businesses.

ii. Casino night spring gala

iii. Trap shoot in April.

8. Motion to close meeting made by Ron Heltsley , second by Louis Ochs , and motion passed.
