Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 students suspended 902 times in a single school year

Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 reported 902 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 902 students during the year. That equates to 26 percent of the 3,475 students enrolled.

Of the 776 in-school suspensions, 630 were given to boys and 146 were given to girls, including 455 elementary or middle schoolers and 321 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 574 incidents. There were 109 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 668 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 126 out-of-school suspensions, 99 were given to boys and 27 were given to girls, including 76 elementary or middle schoolers and 50 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 71 incidents. There were 25 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 68 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
