Carle Richland Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on Aug. 21.
What started out as a normal, boring trip to the DMV turned out to be anything but for everyone there.
On June 19, local resident, Joe Holson, went to the Olney DMV to replace a sticker for his car. As he was entering, Holson stumbled on a curb and fell, injuring his face and breaking his nose.
Immediately after the fall, an unnamed bystander came to Holson’s aid to see if he was alright. After coming up and talking to Holson, the bystander went inside the DMV to see if anyone could help.
As luck would have it, Carle Richland Memorial Hospital nurse, Ann Rudolphi, was there that day. Rudolphi immediately went outside to care for Holson and assess his condition.
“He had lacerated the bridge of his nose, he had some abrasions on his chin and his knees, and his nose mainly was the most injured,” said Rudolphi.
While controlling his bleeding and treating his injuries, Rudolphi talked to Holson to determine his state of awareness. All of which was normal, as Holson was able to answer her questions and recall the incident.
After stopping most of the bleeding, Rudolphi tried to convince Holson to allow her to call 911 so he could be transported to the hospital for further treatment.
Although he was apprehensive at first, Holson eventually agreed and allowed Rudolphi to call an ambulance, as well as his wife. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is now doing well.
Rudolphi said that even though she was off the clock at the time of the incident, she still felt the need to fulfil her duties as a nurse.
“We are here to help,” said Rudolphi. “Everybody in the community has emergencies and we have to be able to respond and take care of these emergencies.”
Apart from her obligations as a nurse, Rudolphi said she helped Holson because she would want someone else to help if a member of her family faced the same situation.
“[Joe] was just by himself,” Rudolphi said. “If he had a family member with him they would have picked him up and cleaned him up, but he was by himself. And so, once I saw him lying there, I couldn’t help but think, ‘What if that was my family? Would someone step up to help them?’”
Holson is immensely grateful towards Rudolphi and the CRMH team and said, “I definitely think a lot more of them…You couldn’t ask for anything better”
