Cost of college went up for all students at Southwestern Illinois College

In-state tuition and fees rose 1 percent for 2017-18 at Southwestern Illinois College, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Illinois residents paid $12,240 to attend the two-year public institution this year $120 more than the $12,120 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 29.7 percent more than residents this year, or $15,870. Their price tag grew 0.8 percent from $15,750 in 2016-17.

About 98 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Illinois residents. And about 1 percent are residents of other states.

Data shows 59 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 500 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.37 million and 218 students took out student loans totaling more than $743,788.

Including all undergraduates, 4,553 students used grants or scholarships totaling $22.72 million. Another 2,023 took out $6.89 million in federal student loans.
