Charleston, Illinois, recently ranked second in the SafeWise 2016 Safest College Towns in America list.

Charleston came in second to Winona, Minnesota, home of Winona State University. Winona also ranked 18th on SafeWise's Safest Cities in America list for 2016.

Charleston, home of Eastern State University, was chosen for its speedy fire and emergency response times. The town is a training ground for emergency and crisis response teams from around the region.

University police patrol the campus around the clock, while the university offers programs like Rape Aggression Defense (RAD), which teach self defense, safety and awareness techniques. Campus crimes have amounted to fewer than five incidents in each of the past two years.

SafeWise picked the safest college towns by calculating the total number of crimes committed annually in each city that hosted at least one institute of higher education. Statistics were weighed against total population statistics, safety programs at the school and in the community, as well as several other factors that make these college towns even safer.
