Tuscola Tourism Committee presents grant request

The city of Tuscola Tourism Committee met Sept. 20 to present a grant request.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the committee:

The meeting was called to order approximately 8:30 am. In attendance: Donna Kidwell, Drew Hoel, Randy Hastings, Devon Story, Allen Schwass, Karen Dukeman, Alta Long and Anna Nelson.

Motion to approve the minutes from the July 19, 2016 board meeting made by Allen, seconded by Donna. All in favor, motion passed.

Old business:

Anna reviewed the market on Main season. The market has had average attendance of 70 people in attendance and 5 to 6 vendors per market. Eleven vendors were the most that were present at one market, but most averaged 4 or 5. Anna said she hopes to try something different next year and switch some things up. She said they've had great success with the outdoor movie nights, so possibly doing something in conjunction with them. She also suggested possibly switching it to once a month event.

The final outdoor movie was rescheduled to September 17 due to rain. And they decided to move the movie to the community building. Attendance was not as great as past events. They had 40 attend. Anna said she would like to see the board fund this program again next summer. It was very successful in the summer months.

New business:

Anna asked for an official vote for the U of I football sponsorship grant. The total project was $25,00 and the mall asked for $13,000 grant from the board. Anna mentioned this was informally approved at the last meeting. Randy made a motion, and Donna seconded all in favor motion passed. Drew also mentioned to the board, that he has discussed with Morrie about extending the football sponsorship to basketball as well. This is something he will as the board to consider for next year. The project cost to the tourism board would be $20,000.

Anna told the board that Cindy Little will be organizing the fall artisan market again downtown. The market is October 1 from 9am to 2pm. And said she's working with downtown businesses to extend the event and market the artisan market and shopping downtown.

Anna explained that once again the Tuscola Odd fellows group would like to host pumpkins in the Park (downtown). They will carve pumpkins on October 23 and keep them up until the 31. There is a small budget for the project, so they will order a new banner and a few new carving tools.

Anna presented the grant request for the Rural life show November 2016 & March 2017. The $1,500 gran (per show) will be used toward advertising. Randy made a motion to approved and Drew seconded. All in favor, motion passed.

A motion to adjourn was made by Randy and seconded by Donna. All in favor motion passed.
