State District 110 Rep. Reggie Phillips (R-Charleston) plans to directly address voter’s concerns over the state’s proposed property tax freeze during a town hall meeting in Greenup tomorrow.
The discussion will focus on the potential impacts of the freeze on communities in the 110th district.
“We’ve heard a lot about the impending property tax freeze bills [in the legislature] and how it will impact communities,” Phillips said, adding he supports those efforts.
“I believe it’s time for a property tax freeze and other business reforms to provide some economic relief to our constituents,” Phillips said. “We have to start growing our economy and bring companies and jobs back to Illinois.”
The property tax freeze is part of a reform package proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner and which passed in the Illinois House of Representatives earlier this year. The plan calls for a two-year freeze on property taxes across the state, but does not apply to home-rule municipalities. The plan essentially puts the issue of property taxes into the hands of the voters, who could vote to allow local governments to raise taxes and give additional funding to schools and local governments. llinoispolicy.org estimated that nearly 8 million Illinois residents live in a home-rule municipality and would be exempt from the property tax freeze.
Phillips said he also plans to address other issues that are of concern to Illinois residents at the "Property Tax Freeze and Community Impacts Town Hall" to be held at the Greenup Municipal Building, 115 E. Cumberland, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“The town hall will be a good opportunity to hear more about issues such as the property tax freeze, workers compensation, fair maps, term limits and other topics being discussed in Springfield,” Phillips said.
