IDoA plans senior-focused festivities for state fair

Senior citizens have a variety of booths to pique their interest at the Illinois State Fair’s Senior Day, which was scheduled for today, Aug. 15., with complimentary admission for ages 60 and up.

Special indoor activities were sponsored by the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA), with all events planned to take place inside the air-conditioned Illinois Building near the fairground’s main entrance.

“We always look forward to participating in the Illinois State Fair,” IDoA Director Jean Bohnhoff said. “Thanks to our innovative staff and partner agencies, our activities are … fun and informative. They provide families with an opportunity to bond over entertaining games while learning more about the various programs and services available to older adults and their families through our department.”

Featured activities included the “NOT SO Newlywed Game,” where older couples see how well they really know each other; as well as the Illinois regional senior Spelling Bee State Finals. IDoA has planned a Grandparent/Grandchild contest at 2 p.m. on Aug. 18, also inside the Illinois Building. Contestants will be judged on resemblance, costumes, talent and interviews, with cash prizes awarded.

Many health-screening opportunities will be available, from blood pressure, cholesterol and bone density tests to informational assessments.

Certain activities require pre-registration. To sign up or to obtain more information, call 217-524-6911 or 800-252-8966.

Event sponsors include Springfield Supportive Living, Central Illinois Senior Celebration, the Association of Illinois Senior Centers and Humana, plus many organizations offering information about their services and programs for seniors.
