The Mattoon High School Alumni Scholarship was recently awarded to six of the school's graduating seniors.
Established in 2011, the scholarship is given to Mattoon High School graduates who are enrolled or planning to enroll as full-time students at a two-year college; four-year college or university; or a vocational or technical school. Scholarship selection is based on a variety of factors including financial need, academic achievement, school and community activities, and work experience.
Among the winners of the $1,000 scholarship were Alexandra Smith, who will study biology with an emphasis in pre-optometry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Breanna Easton, who will study business at Southeastern Illinois University; Lesley Swick, who will study pharmacy at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville; and Lindsay Spitz, who will study biological sciences at Eastern Illinois University.
The $500 scholarship winners include Carly Lowry -- who will study nursing at Lake Land College and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign -- and Jackson Utsler, who will take part in the agricultural power mechanics and technology program at Lake Land College.
