Sawyer Scott recently finished third in Class 3A three-point competition.
Sawyer Scott finished third in Class 3A, sinking 10 of 15 in the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown at Carver Arena on March 18.
Scott happens to be the third person out of four to compete between the Class 3A state semifinals game. He made three of five from the right wing extended and top of the key, before making four of five from the left wing extended. Scott needed to make 11 to force a tiebreaker between Mount Vernon's Braden Fitzjerrells and Mount Zion's Jonah Smith.
Smith secured a win in the Class 3A title, as he made seven of 10 compared to five of 10 by Fitzjerrells. Smith is going to compete for the King of the Hill title Saturday against the winners of Class 1A, 2A and 4A.
It is believed that Smith will be the fourth from Mattoon to compete in the competition and first to make the finals. The three that participated in the preliminaries so far are Nathan Meinhart (2002), Michael Heller (2010) and Grant Spear (2013). They made seven, six and eight, respectively.
