Mattoon Middle School wrestlers’ achievement to win the second place at state was recognized in a reception March 16.
This was the first time the Wildcat wrestling team achieved a second place among 101 teams at the state competition. MMS Principal Jeremie Smith congratulated the team.
Smith, as well as Coach Michael Stanley, appreciated the dedication of the team. They applauded how enthusiastically the students had taken part in summer camps. They had to go through difficult practice sessions. They said the season included a number of round trips, as well.
According to the principal, the families and friends of the wrestlers had been a significant support for them. The coach was excited for the wrestlers as they were moving onto the high school team. All were looking forward to returning team members.
Stanley’s brother Pete coaches the young wrestlers, who were also honored for their performance in the season. Pete also envisioned the future of the young wrestlers as achievers who would secure many other wins for the middle school and the high school.
Both Michael and Pete are MHS alumni, who have represented their district, helping win numerous titles.
