The education board for Shelbyville Community Unit School District No. 4 discussed school improvement in a regular board meeting on Jan. 21.
This semester, Main Street teachers are going to focus on improving student written responses to reading. Common Core standards need students to analyze multiple texts and cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
Main Street School is partnering with the Methodist Church to pilot a mentoring program. In order to qualify for this program, students must have permission from parents and come from a low socioeconomic background.
The meeting heard that the Dec. 18 Carnival had been a huge success. Students could use tickets which they received for exhibiting RAMS (respectful, accountable, motivated and safe) principles throughout the first semester to take part in various activities throughout the building.
Denise Bence reported that the chimney at the high school is drafting from the tunnels underneath the building and also from the windows and doors. The chimney needs to be capped and the price will be $4,500.
A motion to accept the resignation of Leslie Miller as Shelbyville Moulton Middle School Junior High Track Coach, effective at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, was passed.
