During its December 2025 meeting, the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) of Vermilion County addressed issues regarding the termination of its Superintendent. The meeting highlighted that members of the board appeared unfamiliar with procedures required by the Open Meetings Act and distinctions between their own responsibilities and those of the Superintendent, as well as provisions in the Military Veterans Assistance Act.
A central issue was whether the Superintendent could hire an attorney without board approval. The board also discussed whether it had authority to approve payment for legal invoices, a power that is not assigned to them under Section 9(h) of the Military Veterans Assistance Act.
The situation is expected to be addressed further at the next VAC meeting on January 8, 2026. At that time, it is anticipated there will be at least three written requests and a public vote regarding an agenda item related to her termination.
According to Illinois law, county veterans assistance commissions must operate under both state statutes and open meetings requirements: https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=2511&ChapterID=2
