In the March 15 Illinois House Republican primary for District 102,  Randy Peterson and James Acklin lost to Brad Halbrook. A total of 21,462 votes were cast. Halbrook claimed 9,354 votes, while Acklin and Peterson received 8,162 and 3,946 votes, respectively.

In the Presidential Republican primary, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz tied in Cumberland County, each claiming 40.28  percent of the votes. On the Democratic side, 55.95  percent of  Cumberland County voters supported Bernie Sanders, while 39.39 percent voted for Hillary Clinton.

In the Congressional Republican race, Kyle McCarter  lost to John Shimkus  among Coles County voters. On the Democratic side, incumbent Rep. Tammy Duckworth took the lead with 2,600 votes in Coles County over Andrea Zopp, who received 918 votes, and Napoleon Harris, who received 389 votes.
