Charleston to sponsor 2016 spring cleanup

Springcleaning roadsign

Charleston's annual citywide spring cleanup event is scheduled for May 14.

Charleston's annual citywide spring cleanup event is scheduled for May 14.

Charleston residents can dispose of unwanted debris by dropping items off at dumpsters in two different locations when the city holds its annual citywide spring cleanup event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 14.

The City Street Garage, located at 815 Adkins Drive, will be accepting most items, while leaf and limb material can be left at the West Madison Avenue location, past the fairgrounds.

The city will provide dumpsters at no cost to the residents. Only those residing in Charleston, and those who own rental property in the city, are permitted to participate.

Citizens are reminded that certain restrictions apply to the event. Items that cannot be accepted include building materials or construction debris exceeding one cubic yard -- such as drywall, shingles, dirt, brick, concrete, asphalt and rock -- and tires.

Additionally, no liquids, batteries, burnt material or ashes of any kind will be accepted; neither will automotive parts exceeding one cubic yard in volume, nor florescent light tubes and landscape waste.

Those who wish to dispose of appliances or electronics are not out of luck, as Gross Appliances, at 2310 W. State St., will accept appliances on the cleanup day as well as year-round. Electronics can be discarded by contacting COM2 Recycling Solutions, 777 Windsor Drive.
