Mary Miller, U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 15th District, said actions by West Chicago mayor Daniel Bovey to seemingly pressure a local school district over a teacher’s support for law enforcement reflect broader state issues that she says are contributing to residents leaving Illinois.
“This is exactly why our state is failing, and families are leaving in droves,” said Miller.
The statement from Miller responds to an incident involving a West Chicago elementary school teacher who posted “Go ICE!” on social media. This prompted Mayor Bovey to contact the teacher and the district, urging action and promoting community protests. The situation resulted in the teacher being placed on administrative leave due to concerns from parents in a school with many students affected by immigration enforcement. According to Fox News, this event highlighted tensions over law enforcement support within Illinois communities.
Illinois is currently leading the nation in losing younger residents aged 18 and under, with a faster decline rate than any other state, according to recent analyses. This demographic shift poses potential long-term challenges for workforce development and economic vitality. Nationally, U.S. population growth slowed to 0.5 percent between 2024 and 2025, influenced by reduced net international migration.
Miller was born in 1959 in Oak Park, Illinois, and holds a business education degree from Eastern Illinois University. She operates a family farm with her husband, State Representative Chris Miller, and they have seven children and 23 grandchildren. Elected in 2020, she represents Illinois’s 15th District in Congress with a focus on agriculture, education, and conservative priorities.
