State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) said on Mar. 13 that Illinois has become the leading destination for out-of-state abortions, expressing concern about the state’s approach to abortion laws and funding.

Halbrook addressed the House floor last week, stating that Illinois accounted for 23 percent of all out-of-state abortions in 2024, with non-residents making up 39 percent of abortions performed in the state last year. He said these figures should not be seen as an achievement.

Halbrook said, “Under Governor Pritzker, Illinois has not only expanded abortion through law, but is also using public resources to promote and fund it, turning our state into a national hub for abortion.” He added, “This is a tragic reflection of misplaced priorities and a direct assault on the sanctity of innocent life. We should be working to protect the most vulnerable, not making Illinois a beacon for ending unborn lives. All lives matter and deserve our protection.”

Halbrook was elected as a Republican to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 107th House District, replacing previous state representative Blaine Wilhour according to available records.
