Illinois State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) raised concerns on March 18 about increasing energy bills affecting families across the state, questioning lawmakers during a Public Utilities Committee meeting.
Halbrook said that some households are now spending up to one-fifth of their budget on utility bills, and he is seeking clarity on what is causing these increases. The issue matters to many residents who are struggling with higher living expenses and want to understand if state policies are contributing to the problem.
During the committee discussion, Halbrook pressed for answers regarding the reasons behind the rising costs. “Right. But you kind of said you think it is because of the policy, but then you said it’s not because of the policy. So what would you attribute these increasing costs to? I I just want to be clear of why we think this is going up…” Halbrook said.
Halbrook was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 107th House District in 2023, succeeding former state representative Blaine Wilhour according to available information.

The discussion highlights ongoing debates over how state energy policies may impact household budgets and whether further legislative action may be needed.
