State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) said on March 25 that he has heard increasing concerns from young people who want to continue their family’s farming tradition but are worried about the financial impact of the estate tax. Halbrook made these remarks after meeting with Future Farmers of America students at the Capitol.

The issue is important for many families in Illinois, as some fear that estate taxes could make it difficult for younger generations to take over family farms. These concerns come as more young people express a desire to return home and maintain their agricultural heritage.

Halbrook said he met with students who hope to pursue careers in agriculture but feel uncertain about their future due to the financial burden placed on their families by current tax policies. “After meeting with Future Farmers of America students at the Capitol, State Representative Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville) said he heard growing concerns from young people who want to return home and continue their family’s farming legacy, but fear the financial burden placed on their families by the estate tax.”

Halbrook, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 107th House District, replacing previous state representative Blaine Wilhour according to available records.

As discussions around agricultural policy and taxation continue in Illinois, observers will be watching how lawmakers respond to these concerns raised by both current farmers and those hoping to join them.
