State Representative Brad Halbrook is urging Illinois residents to participate in a statewide project led by the Illinois State Museum to mark the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary by sharing their family stories, according to a March 20 announcement.
The effort is part of the museum’s America 250 initiative, which aims to commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence by collecting and showcasing personal histories from across Illinois. The museum plans to feature selected stories in exhibitions, programs, and on social media as part of its celebration.
The museum is asking for submissions that include accounts about when and why families first arrived in Illinois, memories from previous generations, childhood recollections shared by parents or grandparents, or stories about how family members met. All types of stories are welcome, whether they relate to significant historical events or everyday moments.
In 2026, the Illinois State Museum will present exhibitions under the theme “Land of Stories,” focusing on Indigenous life, natural history, people of Illinois, and U.S. Route 66. Residents interested in contributing can submit their stories through a short survey available on the museum’s website. More information can be found through the Illinois State Museum online.
Halbrook was elected as a Republican representative to the Illinois State House in 2023 for the state’s 107th House District, succeeding Blaine Wilhour according to official records.
The America 250 initiative offers an opportunity for residents across generations to contribute their voices and experiences as part of a broader reflection on both local and national history.
