The median commercial property tax rate in Mattoon reached 2.5% during fiscal year 2025, the highest percentage in Coles County, according to BlockShopper.com.

This median was consistent with Coles County’s overall figure of 2.5% for the same year, putting Mattoon in alignment with the county average.

Oakland and Charleston also recorded a 2.5% median tax rate within Coles County that year.

Property tax rates among Coles County’s five cities varied from 0.4% in Lerna up to 2.5% in Mattoon.

During fiscal year 2024, Mattoon’s commercial median property tax rate stood at 2.5%, again leading the county.

Across 53 major U.S. cities, commercial property tax rates averaged 1.76% in 2024 based on a Lincoln Institute of Land Policy report.
