As the new school year approaches, many families in Illinois are facing higher costs for school supplies. Unlike several other states that have implemented back-to-school sales tax holidays to help reduce expenses, Illinois will not offer such a tax break this year. The last time Illinois had a sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping was in 2022.
State Representative Chris Miller commented on the situation:
“Democrat policies have caused inflation to drive up costs for school supplies,” Miller said. ” Every time there’s an opportunity to offer relief, Illinois Democrats stonewall tax relief for middle-class families.”
In contrast, states including Florida, Ohio, Texas, Missouri, and others have scheduled or already held sales tax holidays during July and August to provide financial relief for residents purchasing school-related items.
Miller is a Republican who was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 and represents the state’s 101st House District, succeeding Reggie Phillips.
A number of states with planned or ongoing sales tax holidays include Alabama (July 18-20), Arkansas (August 2-3), Connecticut (August 17-23), Florida (August 1-31), Iowa (August 1-2), Maryland (August 10-16), Massachusetts (August 9-10), Mississippi (July 11-13), Missouri (August 1-3), New Mexico (July 25-27), Ohio (August 1-14), Oklahoma (August 1-3), South Carolina (August 1-3), Tennessee (July 25-27), Texas (August 8-10), Virginia (August 1-3) and West Virginia (August 1-4).
