Illinois State Representative Chris Miller announced on Mar. 18 the filing of House Bill 1498, which aims to strengthen election integrity by removing deceased voters from registration lists more quickly and increasing oversight and reporting requirements.

Miller said the legislation is intended to ensure fair elections in Illinois and prevent potential fraud. “We must protect our elections at all costs and I will support legislation that ensures the citizens of Illinois receive fair elections that are free of fraud,” Miller said. He added, “My bill focuses on election integrity by limiting political committee funds used for criminal defense, removing deceased voters from registration lists faster, increasing oversight and reporting, and creating a dedicated election-integrity office.”

The proposed bill includes several measures such as requiring death records to be used for cleaning voter rolls, mandating faster reporting of deaths, implementing quarterly compliance reports, establishing an Election Integrity Office, and setting up a voter fraud hotline. Miller said these steps are necessary because “the Democrats have used shady tactics in elections before and HB1498 is aimed to eliminate potential fraud in Illinois elections.”

Miller was elected as a Republican to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 101st House District, succeeding former state representative Reggie Phillips according to Ballotpedia.

The introduction of this bill comes amid ongoing discussions about election security across the country. Supporters say such measures could help restore public confidence in electoral processes.

As lawmakers consider HB1498, observers will watch how its provisions might impact future elections in Illinois.
