Eastern Illinois University won against the University of Southern Indiana on April 10, using a run rule to end the game in seven innings. The Panthers improved their record to 19-11 (8-2 Ohio Valley Conference), while the Screaming Eagles fell to 20-15 (4-6 OVC).
The outcome is significant for Eastern Illinois as it strengthens their position in conference play and demonstrates their offensive strength. The Panthers quickly took control of the game by scoring six runs in the second inning. Zak Goodwin singled to center field, putting runners on base, and Peyton Wilson followed with a single that brought James Love home. Ethan Rossi was hit by a pitch, loading the bases before Quade Peters walked to bring in another run.
Tyler Castro drew a walk that scored Wilson, and Brett Stanley extended his hitting streak to 27 games with a double that drove in two more runs. Chris Worcester added another run with a sacrifice hit. Eastern Illinois continued scoring over the next two innings, including three RBIs from Peters and additional contributions from Castro.
Pitcher Tyler Conklin threw seven innings for Eastern Illinois, allowing only three runs and collecting three strikeouts. Conklin improved his season record to 6-2 despite giving up all three runs during the fourth inning.
The Panthers maintained their lead through consistent offense and sealed victory by scoring four more runs over the last three innings. The game ended after seven innings due to the run rule when Castro’s sacrifice bunt scored Joey Hagen and Love singled home Peters for the final run.
By numbers: EIU finished with 13 runs on 10 hits and one error; USI had three runs on six hits without errors. Individual highlights included Tyler Castro going one-for-three with three RBIs, Brett Stanley extending his streak at one-for-four with two RBIs, Quade Peters driving in three RBIs as well as drawing two walks, and Mike O’Conor contributing an RBI double.
Eastern Illinois will host USI again for game two of this weekend series at Frost Field starting at 1:00 PM. The next game will also serve as Frost Field’s dedication event honoring new lighting installation.
